Bollywood’s 200 Crore Club

By Suleman Mobhani

In 2015 we witnessed two films namely Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo making it to the exclusive Rs. 200 crore club. Later in 2016 it was the Salman Khan starrer Sultan that kick started the tally for films that have managed to enter this much coveted club, with the last entrant being the Aamir Khan starrer Dangal. In this edition of Box Office Report Card, we take a look at the films that have managed to break the barrier of Rs. 200 crore. In a comparative analysis we pit the cast, director and of course the five films to break this mark against each other.

Interestingly, while earlier films took days or even weeks to enter the club, 2014 marked a drastic change with PK entering the club in under 10 days, establishing a new record of becoming the fastest film to reach the Rs. 200 crore mark. Later joining Aamir Khan with one of the fastest to reach the 200 cr mark was Salman Khan with Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

However, with Sultan, Salman has claimed the record with the film managing to cross Rs. 200 cr in just six days, while the latest Aamir Khan starrer Dangal took eight days to do the same. Later joining them in 2017 was the SS Rajamouli directed film Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion that collected a staggering Rs. 247 cr in just seven days of its release, followed by the Rohit Shetty directed film Golmaal Again that managed to draw in Rs. 201.41 cr in 17 days of its release. Following theses releases was the Salman Khan – Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger Zinda Hai that has collected Rs. 206.04 cr in seven days of its release. Now the latest film to enter this highly exclusive club and starting 2018 off on a high note is the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial Padmaavat. Starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor the film has managed to cross the Rs. 200 cr mark in just 11 days after its releases. Interestingly, unlike other releases, Padmaavat that collected Rs. 212.50 cr has managed this feat despite facing multiple hurdles and the fact that the film did not feature screenings in certain key markets within India.

Apart from this, below we list a few unknown factoids about the Rs. 200 Crore Club members:

*Chennai Express managed to break 3 Idiots record (of entering the Rs. 200 crore club) after approximately 1267 days/181 weeks. However, Krrish 3 managed to break Chennai Express’ record of entering the 200 cr club after 80 days. Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 followed right after breaking Krrish 3’s record within 50 days.
